Hi folks,
Today we've begun our look into the four key biological molecules; carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids and nucleic acids. Today, was an overview of the topic but next week we will look at these in far more detail.
Now, is a great time to begin your flash card collection. I would highly recommend creating flash cards for the four main molecules and the five different functional groups we've discussed today.
Homework for this week is to answer the following questions.
1. What is a monomer?
2. Draw a monomer of a carbohydrate.
3. Draw a monomer of a lipid.
4. Draw a monomer of a nucleic acid.
5. Draw a monomer of an amino acid.
6. What does the "R" represent in your diagrams?
7. Draw the carboxyl functional group.
8. Draw the phosphate functional group.
9. Draw the aldehyde functional group.
10. Draw the hydroxyl functional group.
11. Draw the ketone functional group.
12. Which biological molecules have the carboxyl group in them? (There may be one or more than one.)
13. Which biological molecules have the aldehyde group in them? (There may be one or more than one.)
14. Which biological molecules have the phosphate group in them? (There may be one or more than one.)
15. Which biological molecules have the hydroxyl group in them? (There may be one or more than one.)
16. What do nucleic acids and carbohydrates have in common?
